Statement in the Guardian 11th October 2004
A group of big banks and property companies are trying to ban a peaceful march at Canary Wharf this Friday. (Loach pitches in for low paid cleaners Guardian Saturday Oct 9). The march is in support of low paid cleaners who are campaigning for union rights and a living wage. It is taking place during the European Social Forum in London.
The banks seem to believe they control the streets in this area of the east end, and that the way they treat their workers is their business alone.
They have summonsed the march organisers to the high court to try to win a ban. Such corporate contempt for human rights only underlines the need to unionise the low paid and the importance of the global justice movement and the European Social Forum. We believe the long established right to demonstrate must be upheld and the protest should go ahead.
